Hoopoe Cottage - Our guest House in the country

(Named after the pair of Hoopoe's that nest in a large acebuche tree - wild olive, in the rear garden)

The enigmatic Hoopoe (Upupa epops).  There is certainly no other bird like it.

Description

Hoopoe Cottage is a self-catering guest house in our own large garden with modern 8mx4m, salt-water pool.

The property is in a quiet location at the end of a country lane, set between the two natural parks of the Marismas of Barbate and the pine forest called Las Breñas, which stretches all the way to the sea-side village of Los Caños de Mecca, near to Cape Trafalgar.

The cottage is open plan and has a kitchen area and a large shower room off the main living area.

There is TV, DVD and CD stereo/radio player. A broadband internet connection is provided for clients who wish to bring a laptop PC for internet use.

Furnishings are modern and very comfortable and there is a wood burning stove for cooler evenings.

Hoopoe Cottage is available to rent throughout the whole year.

Birds and Wildlife

In summer you can watch Red-necked nightjar hawking for moths around the street lights in our lane while Nightingales sing in the distance and Scops Owl "toot" from nearby woodlands. Zitting Cisticola's, Sardinian Warblers, Blue and Great Tits, Serin and Goldfinch all nest in the gardens.

Clients interested in Natural History may wish to view the archived pages of Strait Nature News. This may assist in planning which particular month you'd like to take a break on the Strait of Gibraltar. Every month is different and the variety of wildlife stunning!

Location

The cottage is situated in a quiet lane at La Oliva, midway between the Port of Barbate and Vejer de la Frontera.

Wonderful long sandy beaches are only 5 minutes away. The area is superb for walking, with a lot of routes, protected from the sun in the shade of Stone and Umbrella Pine.

Barbate has a large vibrabt local market which is open 5 days a week from 0900-1400. The selection of fresh fish at the market is wonderful. There are several large supermarkets including two Supersol and a large Lidl.

There are numerous excellent restaurants in the area - too many to describe here......

Cadiz is one hours drive, as is Gibraltar and Seville 90 minutes to the north. Tarifa is 35 minutes south-east on the N340 road.

There are two terraces (Sun or shade), one with a built-in barbeque and the use of a washing machine.
