Day
2.
We awoke before dawn, got washed and organised
and were at the settlements on the river Sous
just as the sun rose.
Local villagers were using rafts and ropes to
pull themselves from one bank to the other.
It was quite cold and we planed to cook breakfast
ourselves once we'd seen the dawn activity through.

On
the riverside trees and scrub on the rocky,
steep sided slopes of the track to the sea,
we watched Moussier's Redstart,
Black Redstart, Stonechat,
Serin, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Spanish Sparrow,
Blackbird, Yellow and White wagtails all
searching for food. Collared Doves flew around
the village and House Buntings
perched on the gables and roof tops of some
of the outlying houses.
Plain Martin, Pallid Swift and Barn
Swallows flew up and down the river
feeding with some House Martin
passing through traveling north.
Little Grebe dived and surfaced
between hoards of Common Coot
who didn't seem the least bit interested in
us at all, and a Little Bittern
roosted in some riverside bushes. Squacco
Heron flew down river and further upstream
we saw Cattle and Little Egret
flying up river.
Moroccan Cormorant with Pochard.
The
Moroccan race of Cormorant
were much in evidence and it looked altogether
a bulkier, stronger bird.
There were also plenty of Moorhen
to be seen and as we walked towards the mouth
of the river Sous, we saw Pintail, Pochard,
Teal, Mallard, Shoveller and Gadwall.
After
scanning the area and seeing Greater
Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbills and Grey Heron,
we had breakfast on the higher stony track that
leads to another of the Atlantic beaches. The
sun was already high in the sky and the temperature
had risen quickly to 25oC! As we relaxed and
ate we watched Short-toed Lark, Skylark
and Thekla Lark flit in the stony arable
hillsides.
